Breaking: Life Sentence Handed Down in Child Rape Case
A Baltimore County Judge on Wednesday sentenced Albert Antonio Jones Jr. to life in prison man for breaking into a home and raping the 13-year-old girl who lived there.
"I can think of nothing more heinous – save for murder – than the rape of a child," Judge Jan Alexander said at the sentencing hearing Wednesday at Baltimore County Circuit Court before handing down the sentence.
Judge Alexander said Jones' records indicate a pattern of violent and antisocial conduct and that Jones posed a threat to public safety
Jones' defense attorney had asked Alexander to consider sentencing Jones to less than the state guideline of 24-40 years, saying the case was entirely circumstantial.
Jones, 44, was convicted Nov. 21 of first-degree rape and burglary for breaking into home of a 13-year-old girl, binding her with duct tape and assaulting her.
Jones was charged with rape, assault, home invasion, and other offenses stemming from a 2023 incident at an apartment on Glen Way.
Investigators believe Jones targeted the girl’s family—breaking into the home, assaulting the teen, and weeks later taking the grandmother’s car.
The jury found Jones not guilty of home invasion.
Jones maintains his innocence.
Jones' defense attorney had asked jurors in his closing arguments at trial to be skeptical of the teen’s story. “Something happened that morning, but there’s nothing to show it happened the way she said it did,” Robert Smith said. Smith pointed to a lack of DNA and fingerprints at the scene and inconsistencies in the girl’s testimony.
Prosecutor Stacy Amparo scoffed at the defense position. The idea that the girl made up the story about being sexually assaulted is “ridiculous,” she said.
“Nobody comes in here in front of 14 total strangers, a courtroom full of people, and makes this up,” Amparo said.
