Mother Found Incompetent to Stand Trial in Son's Stabbing

DUNDALK — A Dundalk mother accused of stabbing her 12-year-old son because he was up late playing video games is incompetent to stand trial, a Baltimore County judge ruled today following a court-ordered mental health evaluation.

Laura Lynn Mills, 38, was indicted last month on charges including first- and second-degree attempted murder, felony child abuse, assault, and a weapons offense.

Mills is not competent to stand trial based on report by the Maryland Department of Health, Judge Thomas Tompsett ruled Friday.

Mills is not able to assist in her defense and does not understand the nature of her court proceedings, Tompsett said.

The court also found Mills presents a danger to herself or others and that she would be best suited in a hospital setting with the Maryland Department of Heath.

Mills is accused of attacking the 12-year-old boy early on Oct. 3 inside their home on Liberty Parkway.

Charging documents say Mills grabbed the knife after finding the boy up at 4:45 am playing on screens.

The boy suffered serious stab wounds to his head, neck, and hand, according to court records.

Mills allegedly fled the scene and was later injured in a car crash in Baltimore City.

Her competency will be reevaluated within in the next six months and annually thereafter.
